Renewing visas

Valid Visas in Expired Passports

If you have a visa in an expired passport, check the visa to see if it is still valid.  If you have a valid visitor (B1/B2) visa, use that visa for short trips of business or pleasure until it expires, even if the passport it is in has expired. An unexpired visa is still valid in an expired passport. Do not remove the visa or the page on which it appears in your expired passport. Simply present both your old and new passports to immigration inspectors upon arrival in the U.S.

If you have a valid visa in another visa category, such as a work visa or student visa, you can only travel on this visa if the purpose of your travel is still the same.  For example, if you have a valid F-1 student visa in an expired passport and you are traveling back to the United States to resume your studies after a short visit in Israel, you can simply present both passports and your I-20 form signed by a school official to the U.S. immigration inspectors.

However, if you have an unexpired visa for work or study, such as H-1B or F-1, but you are no longer working or studying in the United States, or if you have a tourist B1/B2 visa but you intend to work or study, you will need to apply for the appropriate visa for your purpose of travel.  The unexpired visa is no longer valid.

Expired, Lost, and Mutilated Visas

If you had a visa that is now expired, lost, or mutilated, you will need to apply for a new visa. You can schedule an appointment online at http://VisaInfo.US-Visaservices.com

In addition to the required forms, fees, and supporting documents, please bring the following to your visa interview:

  • Any previous passports (Israeli and non-Israeli) with valid or expired U.S. visas;
  • List of entries and exits from the Ministry of Interior; and
  • A signed and dated police report for lost/stolen passports, if available.

Please note: Applicants who have an expired visa or who have lost or mutilated a visa are not guaranteed to receive another visa.  You must meet the requirements to prove yourself eligible for a visa.  Please see the additional information under the appropriate visa type to ensure that you bring the necessary documents to your interview, in addition to those listed above.
