Distinguished American Speaker Series

Professor Graham Allison, Director of Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs

In the highlight of a five-day visit to Israel, Professor Graham Allison, Director of Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and former Defense Department official, delivered a compelling lecture at the residence of Ambassador Daniel C. Kurtzer on Wednesday, January 5, 2005, addressing the topic of "Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Disaster" as part of the Ambassador's Distinguished American Speakers Series. Professor Allison gave an urgent call to action, making the case that nuclear terrorism is inevitable if the world continues on its present course, and set out a plan based on what he called "the three no's": no loose nukes, no new nascent nukes, and no new nuclear states. An audience of Israeli government officials from the Foreign Ministry, National Security Council, Atomic Energy Commission, and the military, as well as leading academics, engaged with Prof. Allison to discuss concrete examples of what can be done to prevent such a catastrophe. While making the case for the inevitability of nuclear terrorism, Professor Allison also provided his own personal ideas for steps toward an antidote to prevent that disaster.
